The local host team

Meet the Chairs

Three researchers from Utrecht University carried the local organisation of the meeting, supported by the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences and an international programme committee.

01

The people behind the local programme

The local host team combined long experience of the ISEE community with a research institute built around environmental exposure and health.

Bert Brunekreef, Ulrike Gehring and Gerard Hoek each worked at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences at Utrecht University. Their roles in the meeting ranged from the overall local chair to the scientific and practical work that turned a proposal into a weeklong programme.

Prof. dr. Bert Brunekreef

Professor of environmental epidemiology

Bert Brunekreef built his career around air pollution, allergens and respiratory health. He is professor of environmental epidemiology at Utrecht University. He hosted the ISEE meeting in 1995, led the society in 1999 and 2000, and won its Goldsmith Award in 2007.

Dr. Ulrike Gehring

Associate professor of environmental epidemiology

Ulrike Gehring is associate professor of environmental epidemiology at Utrecht University. Her research looks at how long term air pollution exposure and other early life factors shape asthma and allergy in children. Birth cohorts are central to that work. She served on the ISEE council from 2016 to 2018.

Dr. Gerard Hoek

Associate professor of environmental epidemiology

Gerard Hoek is associate professor of environmental epidemiology at Utrecht University. His work connects environmental exposure measurement to health outcomes. He has also served on the ISEE council and brought that experience to the local team.

02

The institute

IRAS is the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences at Utrecht University. The organisers placed it among Europe's leading centres for environmental epidemiology. Its work spans air pollution, noise, green space, chemicals, occupational exposures and the methods used to measure them.

The institute's location in Utrecht gave the meeting a natural home: a university city with a strong public health tradition, a compact centre and direct rail links to the rest of Europe.

The local team worked with an international programme committee divided into groups for thematic posters, poster discussions, parallel oral sessions, symposia, keynotes and travel awards.
